Slow Computers

Slow Computer

There are lot of faults of which the symptom will be that computer runs slow. It can include memory, hard drive, motherboard PSU. Sometimes it can fail to boot or has a  very long boot for longer than one minute. Virus, hardware fault, software fault, or anything else can have as a result will be slow system performance. This is because computers are based on information processing and communication between parts. If for example the hard drive has a bad sector that is hard to read data then it will be a few moments till it reads correctly the data. The system will wait until the hard drive will read the data correctly. In fact the hard drive almost always reads and corrects the data. It happens on the fly so quickly that it is not noticeable. Operating systems do not have any warning systems that informs about hardware faults. Windows sometimes gives a message that it can’t read from the memory. But this is not always is the memory problem. So hardware faults and as a result a slow computer system are not seen by the user.

Very good diagnostic tool to see that this is a hardware fault is Windows installation disk. The setup runs in file protection mode and will inform with a message usually telling that it can’t read or write a file. This will indicate hardware fault and will needed a further investigation and troubleshooting.

Very often computer running slow because there is not enough memory installed or in other words there is not enough RAM. Vista needs at least 2 GB of RAM to run at reasonable speed. Windows XP also needs about 1GB of RAM to run applications such as Firefox. For example Firefox will take about 300 BM of Ram with a few tabs open. The part of memory also needed for operating system itself and for other applications that run in background.

For Windows 7 is also enough 2 GB of RAM to run everyday’s tasks. Depending on application needs this amount can be increased to 4 GB for 32 bit systems and more than 4 GB for 64 bit systems. The graphics also can take a part of the memory. It can be from 128 GB to 2 GB. It is called shared memory with graphics card. Better is to have a graphics card with dedicated memory.

If there is not enough RAM Windows makes a file on the disk that holds part of the memory needed for correct operation. In this case computer speed decreases dramatically. How to speed up computer in this situation is simply add a more memory.
